The August figure marked the second increase in three months, following a decline in July. It remained well below the all-time high of 1,823 thousand set in January 2006, and above the record low of 353 thousand from March 2009. The series, which began in January 1959, showed a year-over-year increase, with August 2026 up from 873 thousand in August 2025. The latest reading also exceeded the 902 thousand recorded in June 2026, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
