Hungary's foreign-exchange reserves (ex-gold) edged down to $73.6 billion in August from $73.9 billion in July, retreating from the all-time high set the prior month. The decline was modest, leaving reserves near their highest level in the series dating back to April 2000. Reserves had climbed sharply over the prior eight months, from $59.0 billion in December 2025 to the record $73.9 billion in July. They remain well above the $56.4 billion recorded a year earlier, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Hungary's gold reserves rose to $15.69 billion in August 2026, from $14.32 billion in July, according to the International Monetary Fund. The August value remains below the all-time high of $18.32 billion set in February 2026, but is up from $12.04 billion a year earlier. The series, which began in April 2000, has shown a general upward trend over the past year, with the latest reading marking the second consecutive monthly increase after a decline in June. The value is still well above the all-time low of zero recorded in December 2016, according to the IMF.

Hungary's benchmark interest rate fell to 5.5% in August 2026 from 5.75% in July 2026. The rate is now at its lowest since May 2022, and compares with 6.5% a year earlier. The central bank has cut rates from 6.5% at the start of 2026, according to the Bank for International Settlements.

Hungary's consumer price inflation rose to 1.28% in August 2026 from 1.15% in July 2026, according to the International Monetary Fund. The rate remained well below the 4.28% recorded a year earlier and was off the series high of 38.58% in June 1991.

Hungary's official period-average exchange rate against the US dollar fell to 314.08 forints in August 2026, from 314.43 in July. The August reading reversed part of the July increase from 307.21. The exchange rate has fluctuated between 306.91 and 336.73 over the past six months. The forint has strengthened from 341.10 a year earlier, and remains well below the all-time high of 426.10 recorded in October 2022, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Hungary's business confidence fell to -8.2 in August from -1.7 in July. The August reading reversed the sharp improvement in July, when the index had reached its highest level since at least August 2025. The index has been in negative territory throughout the past year and remains above its year-ago reading of -11.2, according to Eurostat.
